Just across the border from Vila Real is Ayamonte, we go there fairly frequently, usually to the Mercadona Supermarket which carries a good stock of Spanish wines. If you like Rioja it is the place to go, it only takes 30 mins to get to there and there is a 1 hour time difference. Fuel is 10-20% cheaper in Spain and there are also a few really good places to eat, such as:

• LPA Culinary Bar – +34 633 66 76 03  Excellent little Tapas Style restaurant in Plaza de la Lota, at the waterfront end of the street and not easy to spot (second unit back from the end – look out for the Gold logo LPA, just to the side of the entrance). This is a new location, it is bigger than the previous property and the food/service is excellent. Run by and Italian/Irish couple and always busy.
• La Para – +34 697 23 69 31 We haven’t tried this yet but it comes highly recommended. In Plaza de la Laguna
